Merry-Derry Bombadil
(Tune: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy)
He was a famous legend-man
From ancient days
He had a babblin' style
That no one ever could say
He was a wanderer o'er the land
But as the ages went by
He went and took up a stand.
He's in the Forest now,
Singin' levity,
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
He went to pick some lilies
For his lovely wife,
A River-Daughter gal,
With whom he never had strife.
The lady seemed to understand
All of his gobbledygook,
Keeping his antics in hand.
And even willows jump
When he sings levity;
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
 A-hey a-dey
A-hoy dillo-ee-along-hop
He sings his frivolity
In silly rhythm
He can't sing a note
Unless the conundrum
Is tangled in 'im.
He makes the willow jump
When he sings levity
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees
And when he sings facetious rhyming foolery,
He's as flighty as a flea;
And when he sings hoppin' tunes,
Incomprehensibly
His flappin' tongue is full
With slangy babble,
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
Hop a-long
Ring diddle-ee-dillo-hey
He sings his rigamarole
Hoy-dillo-hearties!
He can't sing a note
If the paradox
Ain't washin' through 'im
A-and the willow jumps
When he sings levity
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
He puts the trees to sleep
With babble every night
And wakes them up the same way
In the early bright
They wave their leaves and stretch their roots
Because they know how he's singin'
In his bright yellow boots,
He really wakes them up
When he sings levity
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.
A-and the willow jumps
When he sings levity,
He's the merry-derry Bombadil down under the trees.

Legolas Legolas
(to the tune of the William Tell Overture)

Legolas Legolas with your slippered feet,
Legolas Legolas will the Sun you greet
Legolas Legolas somewhere in the snow
How will we escape these drifts that blow?

I shall run for the Sun, run for the Sun,  run for the Sun when you are done,
For the storm is past and so at last
I will walk where your heavy feet can't pass.

Legolas Legolas with your far-seeing eyes,
Legolas Legolas what is that you spy?
Legolas Legolas  is it far away?
Should we travel now by night, not day?

It's an regal eagle, regal eagle, regal eagle - near the sun!
But we're hidin' flightin' in the nightin'
'cause we don't know which side it be on.

Legolas Legolas standing near the boats,
Legolas Legolas what is that that floats?
Legolas Legolas it is dark and black,
Take an arrow please and turn it back!

It's an evil deevil, evil deevil, evil deevil black as sin!
Even though I don't know really what it is,
With my bow I'll cave it's dark heart in.

Legolas Legolas with your eyes that change,
Legolas Legolas where did those orcs range?
Legolas Legolas in their speedy flight
Did they take our hobbits left or right?

They're a-turning churning, turning churning, turning churning to the East!
To the East and North the Uruks course
Is showin' they're Saruman's beasts.

Legolas is Dreamin'
(tune of California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas)

All the leaves are brown (All the leaves are brown)
And the moss is green (And the moss is green)
He'd been for a walk (He'd been for a walk)
In this arbored scene (Of a arbored scene)
He'd been free to go (He'd been free to go)
If he had been Sean Bean... (If he had been Sean Bean...)

Legolas is dreamin' (Legolas is dreamin')
Of ancient trees so green...

Stopped by duties now
He'd had to pass the trees
Well, he rode off on his horse (Rode off on his horse)
And turned away from leaves (Turned away from leaves)
You know that Fangorn likes a fan (Fangorn likes a fan)
And this Elf's gonna please (This Elf's gonna please)

Legolas is dreamin' (Legolas is dreamin')
Of ancient trees so green...

All the leaves are brown (All the leaves are brown)
And the moss is green (And the moss is green)
He'd been for a walk (He'd been for a walk)
In this arbored scene (In this arbored scene)
How he wished to hug them, (He wished to hug them)
These ancient angsty trees. (Ancient angsty trees)

Legolas is dreamin' (Legolas is dreamin')
Of ancient trees so green...

The Manyname King
(Tune of The Marvelous Toy by Peter, Paul and Mary)

When he was just a wee little lad,
Full of stealth and fame,
His father homeward came one night
And gave to him a name.
A wonder to behold he was
With many versions dubbed
And the moment we were told of them,
They began our tongue's to stub.

He's Wingfoot when he moves, Strider when he strides,
And a Ranger standing still.
Elessar and Estel are two more, his destiny to fill.

The first time we were introduced,
We had a big surprise
Cause written on a letter were two big 'handles'
That rounded out our eyes;
We first said one and then the other,
Then we twisted our tongues,
And when we heard him named again, here is what was sung:

He's Elfstone to the Elves, Bilbo says Dunedain,
Telcontar when he's crowned King,
He's the Heir of Isildur, they say, and many other things.

We first marched left, and then marched right
And then marched under a hill,
And then we found where he had gone -
An empty throne to fill!
We wondered aloud how the scribes would cry,
'cause he knew that they would find,
When they started to write, our manynamed King
Would be writing them all blind.

He's the Flame of the West, the Hope of the North,
The Broken Sword Reforged,
And named besides for the various lands over which he's Lord.

The names have gone by too quickly it seems,
Sometimes they sound all the same,
And yesterday I heard him get
Yet another kingly name:
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head
And he gave a squeal of glee!
Neither one of us knows just what it means
But he loves more names, you see!

He's still the...
Hands of the King, Captain of the Host,
The Man of the Westernesse.
We never knew quite all of them and we never e'er will guess.

Are These Trees Here My Trees?
(To the tune of: Do you hear what I hear?)

Said the Elf Lord to the Ranger-man,
Are these trees here my trees?
Underneath the stars, Ranger-man,
Are these trees here my trees?
They are, they are, none of them I hold -
But your daughter, with her I'll be bold...
For she does not do as she's told.

Said the Ranger-man to the Elven lass,
Though your ears aren't my ears,
Different we are, Elven lass,
Though your ears aren't my ears,
I'll take your hand, though your father I disjoint,
For your ears are not the main point,
For your ears are not the main point.

Said the Elven lass to the mighty king,
You have dough, so let's go!
Now that you are rich, mighty king,
You have dough, so let's go!
My dad, my dad's looking all resigned,
But I'm sure he won't really mind,
But I'm sure he won't really mind.

Said the king to the people everywhere,
Listen to what I say,
See this land, people everywhere?
Listen to what I say!
The land, the cash, all the things I please,
They are mine now, even the trees,
They are mine now, even the trees!

Warggin' Along
To the tune of "We ain't got a Barrel of Money (Side by Side)

Oh, we've all got a hide that is hairy, maybe we’re ragged and wary,
But we’re wargging along, snarling a song, side by side.

We don’t know what’s a-coming tomorrow, maybe it’s trouble and sorrow,
But we’ll chew on the foes, taking the blows, side by side.

Through all kinds of weather, what if our breath should stink?
Just as long as we’re together, we really don't reason or think,
When they’ve all had their quarrels and parted, we’ll be the same as we started,
Just wargging along, snarling our song, side by side.

Yeah, we're
nineteen weary wargs, not that we really can count,
Just as long as we’re together we'll be fed, so we haven't a doubt.
Now, when they’ve all had their quarrels and parted, we’ll be the same as we started,
Just a-wargging along, snarling a song, side by side.

This was written for the 24-Days of Christmas challenge

Galadriel
(To the tune of Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond)

Where it began, we can't begin to know when,
But then you started growing strong.
Oh, was it that ring, whooo
That ring really did a number -
Who'd believe you'd go so wrong.

Hair, oh so fair, shining out,
Was it sun? Was it moon?
Oh, Ga-ladriel,
Green times never looked so green,
You've caught a star in water, there ever seen.

And now you, you stand in the night, whooo
And it don't seem so dark now,
You fill it up with lighted stars, oh
And when it's cold,
Winter runs off the leaves here,
Always in gold they wait for you.

Oh, one, shining one, hidden here,
Like a star on your hand.
Oh, Ga-ladriel
Green times never looked so green,
You've caught a star in water, there ever seen.

Ohhh, Ga-ladriel, Green times never looked so green.

Mallorns
(to the tune of that much abhorred song, Feelings, an Elf in Valinor expresses his regrets)

Mallorns, nothing more than mallorns,
Trying to forget my mallorns I loved.
Fruit-trees, here there’s only fruit-trees,
Nothing as tall as the mallorns I loved.

Mallorns, in Middle-earth they grow them -
I wish I'd never left my flet;
They'll never grow like those.

Mallorns, mo-o-o mallorns,
Mo-o-o, feel them again under my feet.

Mallorns, mallorns
Like humongous columns,
And mallorns like a city
With so many flets above.

Mallorns, for all my life I'll miss them.
I wish I'd thought to bring some seeds;
They never grow them here.

Mallorns, mallorns – true, they
Never grew fruit,
But mallorns were sure pretty and tall;
And the leaves were so nice.

Mallorns, mo-o-o mallorns,
Mo-o-o, mallorns underneath my feet.
Mallorns...

In response to a challenge to come up with something to a simple child's tune...

Blow, blow, blow your horn,
Through the Buckland trees,
Merry breathe, Merry breathe, Merry breathe, Merry breathe,
Ruffians to seize!

Twinkle twinkle little star
Why are you trapped in a jar?
From the font snatched like a fly,
Glad your light can help a guy -

Twinkle twinkle little star,
Why are you trapped in a jar?

Do You Believe Elf Magic?
(to the tune of Do You Believe in Magic by Lovin Spoonful)

Do you believe Elf magic, in a hobbit's heart,
How the stars get all sparkly, whenever it starts -
And it's magic, though it don't help on quests,
It makes you feel happy like you've had a rest,
She'll tell you about the magic, and you might wish for more,
But it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout pipeweed lore.

If you believe Elf magic don't bother to choose,
Because no matter how you ask it, you'll probably lose.
Just sit and listen, it'll start with a smile,
It won't won't make any sense no matter how hard you try.
Your path and where you're goin' you can't seem to find,
But askin' the Elves, that'll just blow your mind.

If you believe Elf magic, come along with me
We'll walk until morning 'til there's just you and me
And maybe, if the Elves were right
We'll meet Gollum tomorrow, sort of late at night
And we'll go walkin', Samwise, then you'll see
How the magic's in the Elves and the Elvish's in me

Yeah, do you believe Elf magic,
Yeah, believe in the magic of a sparkly mirror
Believe in Elf magic when Eyes draw near,
Believe in Elf magic, neither yes or no,
Ohh, talking Elf magic, told you so.

Down on the River
(to the tune of Down on the Corner by Creedence Clearwater Revival)

Early in the evenin' just passin' up tea time,
Over by Parth Galen they're starting to unwind.
Four hobbits on the bank are soon to be split up,
Evil's drawing nearer - if the Elf could only wake them up!

Down on the River goin' with the flow,
Nazgul and the Uruks are comin';
Bring an axe now; twang your bow..

Morning comes with darkness and ol' Frodo's got no smile,
Blinking, has to make a choice, goes solo for a while.
Boromir twangs the wrong string speakin' 'out about his town,
Frodos runnin' down the hill, nowhere found around!

Down on the River goin' with the flow,
Nazgul and the Uruks are comin';
Bring an axe now; twang your bow. (repeat)

He don't need an arrow just to hang around,
But when he's got them pokin' out, he lays his honor down.
Boromir is floatin', the others running forth -.
Nothing left but baggage, they are off to hunt some orc.

Down on the River goin' with the flow,
Nazgul and the Uruks are comin';
Bring an axe now; twang your bow. (repeat)

Wishin' for a Ship on the Bay
(to the tune of Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay)

Riding in the morning sun,
I'll be waiting when the evening comes;
Watching the waves roll in
And I watch 'em roll away again.

Refrain:
Wishin' for a ship on the Bay
Watching the tide roll away
I'm just wishin' for a ship on the Bay
All the time.

I left my home of Bag End,
Headed for the Mithlond Bay
'Cause I had nothin to live for -
Now looks like healing's gonna come my way.

So I'm just...
(refrain)

Looks like the Shire's gonna change,
Even Elves don't remain the same -
I still feel every March what happened...
I'll go with them to remain sane.

Sittin' here resting with friends,
Now this loneliness may finally end.
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make the West my home.

Now, I'm just...
(refrain)

Build Me Up Denethor
(to the tune of Build Me Up Buttercup by the Temptations)

Why do you build me up (build me up) Denethor, Daddy,
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around,
And then worst of all (worst of all) you love my bro, Daddy,
And you say you do (say you do) but I love you too -
I need you (I need you) or at least your approval,
You know that I have from the start...
So build me up (build me up) Denethor, don't break my heart.

"Your uses are few", you told me time and again
How I tried to be like my brother (bah-dah-dah),
I turn to the door, as you tell me once more
I'm not him, "You let me down again."

(Hey, hey, hey!) Boromir, he held your heart,
(Hey, hey, hey!) But he's gone, and I'll take his place,
(Hey, hey, hey!) I'll be here,
I'll be doing my best just for you -
Oooo-Oooo, oooo-oooo

Why do you build me up (build me up) Denethor, Daddy,
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around,
And then worst of all (worst of all) you like my bro, Daddy,
And you say you do (say you do) but I love you still -
I need you (I need you) or at least your approval,
You know that I have from the start...
So build me up (build me up) Denethor, don't break my heart.

To you I'm a boy, but I'm still not the boy you adore.
If you'd just let me try (bah-dah-dah)
Although you're untrue, Dad I'm wanting your love all the more,
Why do I need you so?

(Hey, hey, hey!) I'm your son too, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey!) A little smile and I'll go the mile -
(Hey, hey, hey!) It's your war,
And I'm fighting the orcs just for you.

I-I-I need you-oo-oo more than anyone, Daddy,
You know that I have from the start,
So build me up (build me up) Denethor, don't break my heart.

I am an Elf
(to the tune of I am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel)

This autumn day
In a deep and dark October;
I sit alone,
Gazing o'er my Council, picking out the tools,
To assemble wisdom from a crowd of fools.
I am an Elf,
I am an Elrond.
I've built walls,
A valley deep and mighty,
That few can ever find.
I have no need of mortals; mortals drifting by,
Their weakness and their aging I deny.
I am an Elf,
I am an Elrond.

Don't talk of Men,
How I've heard their words before;
Their proudly puffed up lineage,
Tho' they're the one with forebears, Isildur's sorry lot,
His spinelessness essential to the plot.
I am an Elf,
I am an Elrond.

I have my looks,
And my loopy hair to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Wisdom in my glance, I can take the stance,
I wrinkle not and no one wrinkles me.
I am an Elf,
I am an Elrond.

And an Elf shows no age;
And an Elrond never dies.

Shire
(to the tune of Sugar Sugar by the Archies)

Shire, ah homey homey -
You are a peaceful land
And you've got me wanting you.
Sweet-home, ah Shire, Shire -
You are a peaceful land
And you've got me missing you.

I just can't believe the homesickness of missing you
(Tho' it's terrible for me to stew)
I just must believe the Shire is there to come home to
(I just must believe it's true)

Ah Shire, ah homey homey
You are a peaceful land
And you've got me wanting you.
So lovely, ah Shire,Shire -
You are a peaceful land
And you've got me missing you.

When I miss the Hill, I wonder how the garden's grown -
(I wonder if the grass is mown)
How's Miss Rosie Cotton - does she know how I have roamed?
(How I wish that I was home)

Shire, pour a little ale back at homey,
Pour a little ale for my Gaffer,
I'm gonna dream of cakes so sweet, yeah yeah yeah
Pour a little sugar on them oh yeah
Pour another evenin'  full of laughter,
Pour a little ale for my Gaffer
I'm gonna dream of cakes so sweet, yeah yeah yeah
Pour a little ale now for afters....

Ah Shire, ah homey homey
You are a peaceful land
And you've got me missing you.
Oh sweet-home, sweet-home, Shire, Shire ..........
You are a peaceful land ........

O Sackville
To 'O Come O Come Immanuel'

O come O come from not-so-far Sackville,
And take the spoon whereever you will,
Lobelia, with family in tow,
Will gripe as in her 'brella now she stows,
The spoons! The gems!
And anything else small,
She's coming now, fair waddling down the hall.

Oh come thou cousins, come right over here,
And see the parcels, tags mixed up we fear...
Angelica, so fair of face,
A mirror here to help you see your grace.
A bin! A pen!
But not a scrap of gold,
Though legends claim there's more, so we are told.

O come two Boffins, Bolger and Proudfoot,
And excavate the pantry to the root,
So sure of finding treasure in there,
They'll dig until they're pulled out by their hair -
The holes! The greed!
There's jools in that Hill,
They're sure of it, they'll never get their fill.

Ferny Bills
(Silver Bells)

In the Pony, busy Pony,
In the corner alone,
Dunadan
Has been feeling
Suspicious.

Watch that, Mister...
People whisper,
Telling tale after tale
And on ev'ry street corner he sees...

Ferny Bills, Ferny Bills -
It's slinking time at the Pony.
Ring is here, where oh where?
Quick, lest they all get away.

Strings of rumors,
As the kegs pour -
Unaware they are seen
As the Southerns slip
Out with their cohorts.

Hear the glass smash,
See the beds slashed:
This is Ferny's big scene.
And beyond ruined bolsters,
You'll see,

Ferny Bills, Ferny Bills,
It's slinking time at the Pony
Ring is here, where oh where?
Quick, lest they all get away.

He Came Upon a Midnight Clear

(To ' It Came Upon a Midnight Clear')

He came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious bird they send,
The eagle swooping near the earth,
To save his wizardly friend!
A friend was gained and gained again
From Gwaihir, by gracious flight!
For Isengard and mountains lay,
Well seen by eagles' sight.

Still through the cloven skies he came,
With giant wings unfurled,
And took the wizardly friend afloat,
O'er all the weary world;
Above, then down to Lorien,
Where grey would be dressed in white -
So even o'er the fate of Men,
The eagles kept their sight.

Have a Mossy Tossy Huorn
(To Have a Holly Jolly Christmas)

Have a mossy tossy Huorn,
It's the best revenge that's near,
Hold the fort and there'll be orcs
A-mulching, never fear.

Have a mossy tossy Huorn,
And when you walk in the woods
As a treat beneath your feet
For plant-food orcs are good.

Ho ho this orc-host foe
Lurks with roots a-weave,
Patiently waits for them
To run beneath the leaves.

Have a mossy tossy Huorn
For indeed the trees are near -
Oh bygolly have a mossy tossy Huorn
This year!
