Back to LOTR, this set with it's "splatter" covers was published by Houghton Mifflin in the mid-to-late 1960's.  It is the 2nd edition, but I have seen everything from "3rd Printing" to "8th Printing" paired with it, so I can't vouch for that detail. The lettering style is very 60's.
