Commentary by Frodo's Feet:

For those of you that are not familiar with the project here is a short history of how it came about and what it involves.

Some time shortly after Christmas 2001 a LOTR fan writing on the message boards made a suggestion that went something like this:

"Wouldn't it be great if we would write a thank you letter to PJ and the cast and crew of the film, and if somehow all of us on the message boards could sign it."

The suggestion was made by "Merka"

Several other fan club members took up the challenge. First "Daan Dourhand" composed the letter. (This is the letter that you can read in its hard copy format by clicking the link on the left.) Daan has collected over two hundred fan club member handles that have been emailed, together with the letter, to PJ via the fan club.

Myself and several other volunteers, who are referred to as "Captains", then took up the challenge of organising a hard copy paper letter. This involved nine "chain mail" packages that have circulated around the globe via the good old-fashioned postal system. Each chain was organised and administered by one of the Captains and the whole kaboodle overseen by myself. There are 115 people on these chains.

Each Captain was in charge of their own chain group, making sure that the chain letter packs were posted promptly from fan to fan for signing. Finally all the packs were returned to me in November 2002 for binding, and the whole pack was posted to P.J. in New Zealand.

The letter itself, painstakingly scribed and painted myself, and the signatory sheets can be viewed by clicking on the thumbnails.

Unfortunately there were many people who applied to be a part of this letter after the cut-off date and therefore could not be included in the chain letters. This letter is a representation of the feelings of the many thousands of fans who regularly log into the message boards at Decipher to express their appreciation and gratitude.

You will notice that there are two pages missing from the letter at present. Unfortunately I am still awaiting the return of two of the signatory sheets and, due to the impending release of The Two Towers and our desire to get the fan letter to P. J. before its release, I am afraid I could not wait for them any longer. I will forward these pages on as soon as I receive them and I will include them on the web site.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has taken part in this project. Especially I would like to thank the nine captains who have kept the chain letter packs moving around the globe. Their help and support has been tireless throughout, and was particularly appreciated during the many very stressful times when the packs (and the fans) periodically disappeared off the face of the earth only to reappear again safe and sound some months later!

Also a special thank you to Merka, whose idea this was, and Daan Douhand for composing the letter and handling the electronicly emailed letter.
