Coming back to LOTR, here is a 1964 hardbound set from Allen & Unwin that had that lovely pastel countryside from Pauline Baynes on its box.  You can see the artwork wrapped all the way around in a panorama.   With it is the rather less picturesque Reader's Union set from 1960 in which the Eye appears to be broadcasting from a hot-pink radio tower. This is radio Sauron...all Sauron, all the time....
