Thanks to all
Gandalf continued leading the company his mind drifted back to the words of Saruman; you did not have the wit to see it. Yes, it had been before me all these long years, why had I not seen it.
He tried to set his mind back to the task at hand, but Gandalf could not. It is precious to me, though I buy it with great pain**, the words of Isildur haunted Gandalf’s thoughts. Isildur was lucky thought Gandalf, lucky to have been killed. After seeing what it had done to Gollum and Bilbo, yes lucky indeed. Not to have endured the further decay that had already begun as evidenced in Isildur’s written words. ‘But for my part I will risk no hurt to this thing; of all the works of Sauron the only fair.’**
There was nothing of Sauron’s that was fair or came to good thought Gandalf, as had he not witnessed the corruption of one of his own, Saruman.
Gandalf turned to look at Frodo, what would the ring do to him. Would he have taken the ring if he had seen what had become of poor Smeagol? Gandalf’s heart was heavy with worry for the gentle hobbit.
A cold wind suddenly shot through him, and he held his hat to his head. Yes, what would the ring do to Frodo? What would it do to the company? I will have to be the glue that binds this group together, for soon the ring will effect them all.
‘One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them in the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.’**
To Mordor they would go, let us hope we do not trust in vain, Gandalf thought as the winter wind chilled him once more. It's icy fingers searching him...
