Lord of the Wing

A TRIBUTE TO GWAIHIR

"Twice you have borne me, Gwaihir my friend," said Gandalf. "Thrice  shall pay for all if you are willing. ...

Gwaihir circled the smoke filled poisoned air over Mordor his eyes seeking them, the little ones who had ventured into this wasteland to save Middle Earth. There was little hope in his flight yet  perhaps....Gandalf believed so indeed he would search. Only he and his strongest brothers could tolerate the stench above Mordor and they did so only at  Gandalf's request.

Smoke billowed from the cracks made in the Earth as Mount Doom erupted in its defeat still he flew lower seeking them. He was a great bird of prey his eyes the sharpest of all creatures if they were to be found he would accomplish it. The smoke parted before him such was the turbulence of his great wings. Then he saw them small and desperate clinging to one another. Even as he swept down faster than the wind he saw them fall as if dead. Still he would go on to pick up the tiny bodies not knowing if they lived or if their quest had finally claimed them.

His great claws gently picked up the dark haired one, his brother retrieved the other they were no weight at all. He bore them out of Mordor. Beyond all hope and all possibility Gwaihir had delivered them out of the darkness and gave them a second chance at life.

The proud Lord waited for no thanks and said nothing to any who observed. As he lifted effortlessly back into the air he looked back down at the tiny lives he had saved. It was after all an even trade, now that the One had been un-made...It was true indeed the third time does pay for all.

~~~~~~ Gandalf held his arms aloft "Hail LORD of the WING".~~~~~~
OH I KNOW IT'S NOT MUCH BET I HAD TO DO SOMETHING FOR GWAIHIR..
After all if not for him Frodo and Sam would never have survived. Then where would Rosie be?
SO HERE IS TO GWAIHIR A HERO IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD.
His willingness to do a task that was below his bearing should be an example to us all.
