An Inkling for Faramir Day

by Gamlefan

Explanation:

During one of our Faramir-scene grumbles earlier this year, someone challenged us:
have you ever written a film script? do you know the constraints? could you do any better?
So I thought I'd try.

I accept the two limitations which Peter Jackson says constrained him: that Faramir must be tempted by the ring (if two of the three men who encounter it can resist, what is all the fuss about?); and that he needed some tension for the final Frodo scenes in TTT (because the Shelob scenes were needed in ROTK). I have therefore taken Jackson's script as my base, changing the action slightly and adding dialogue. It is very rough, because I did not have much time to spend on it. It is also too wordy (language which reads beautifully on the printed page sounds artificial when spoken aloud), but I have left it that way to show how J.R.R. Tolkien's dialogue could have been included.

To have captured Faramir the scholar would have required far more dialogue than this, but I have tried to show something of his thoughtfulness and kindness. What do you think? Might this, or something like it, have worked?

FARAMIR and his men look over a map

FARAMIR
What news?

MADRIL
Our scouts report Saruman has attacked Rohan. Théoden's people have fled to Helm's Deep. But we must look to our own borders. Faramir, Orcs are on the move. Sauron is marshalling an army. Easterlings and Southrons are passing through the Black Gate.

FARAMIR
How many?

MADRIL
Some thousands. More come every day.

FARAMIR
Who's covering the river to the north?

MADRIL
We pulled five hundred men out of Osgiliath. If their city is attacked, we won't hold it.

FARAMIR
Saruman attacks from Isengard. Sauron from Mordor. The fight will come to men on both fronts. Gondor is weak. Sauron will strike us soon. And he will strike hard. He knows now we do not have the strength to repel him.

FARAMIR (to SAM and FRODO)
My men tell me that you are Orc spies.

SAM
Spies? Now wait just a minute.

FARAMIR
Well if you're not spies, then who are you? Speak!

FRODO
We are Hobbits of the Shire. Frodo Baggins is my name, and this is Samwise Gamgee.

FARAMIR
Your bodyguard?

SAM
His gardener.

FARAMIR
And where is your skulking friend? That gangrel creature. He had an ill-favoured look.

FRODO
I do not know where he is. He was only a chance companion, met upon the way. I am not answerable for him. We two set out from Rivendell with seven companions. One, Gandalf, we lost in Moria.

FARAMIR [interrupting, suspicious]
Gandalf the Grey! Lost? It is hard to believe that one of such great wisdom and power should perish. The others in your Company?

FRODO
Two were my kin. A dwarf there was also. And an elf. And two men. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and Boromir of Gondor.

FARAMIR
You're a friend of Boromir?

FRODO
Yes, for my part.

FARAMIR
It will grieve you then to learn that he is dead?

FRODO
Dead? How? When?

FARAMIR
As one of his companions, I had hoped you would tell me.

FRODO
He was alive and strong when we parted.

FARAMIR
There are many perils in the world, and treachery not the least.

SAM
See here Captain. If you think my master murdered Boromir and then ran away, you've got no sense. But say it, and then let us know what you mean to do about it.

FARAMIR
Patience. I am trying to judge justly in a hard matter. I might have slain you long ago, for I am commanded to slay all whom I find in this land without leave of Gondor. But I do not kill needlessly, or gladly. So be silent.

[Pause]

Boromir was my brother. Eleven days ago, we heard the blowing of his horn, the horn of Gondor. Dimly, as though it were an echoing in the mind. A boding of ill, we thought it, for we had heard no news of him since he went away. Then on the third night after, as I kept watch by the Anduin, I saw a boat floating on the water, glimmering grey, with none to steer or row it. I began to walk out towards it, and it turned towards me, and floated slowly by. In it was Boromir, my brother, dead, with many wounds on him. I knew his gear, his sword, his beloved face, although not the belt around his waist. I dared not touch the boat, and it passed glimmering on into the night.

FRODO
Alas, that was indeed Boromir. The belt was given to him in Lothlorien by the Lady Galadriel.

FARAMIR
You passed through the Land of Lorien? There is much that is strange about you. It is perilous for mortals to walk there.

PARN
Captain Faramir. We found the third one.

FARAMIR
You must come with me. Now.

FRODO is led outside

FARAMIR
Down there.

FRODO looks down to the Forbidden Pool and sees SMEAGOL dive in it.

FARAMIR
To enter the Forbidden Pool bears the penalty of death.

[Archers step out from the bushes, ready to shoot]

FARAMIR
They wait for my command. Shall I shoot?

SMEAGOL
The rock and pool is nice and cool, so juicy sweeeet. Our only wish, to catch a fish, so juicy sweeeeet!

FRODO
Wait. This creature is bound to me. And I to him. He is our guide. Please, let me go down to him.

[FARAMIR allows FRODO to go to SMEAGOL, who is eating the fish.]

FRODO
Sméagol. Master is here. Come, Sméagol. Trust master. Come.

SMEAGOL
We must... go now?

FRODO
Sméagol, you must trust master. Follow me, come on. Come. Come, Sméagol. Nice Sméagol. That's it. Come on.

[FARAMIR'S men jump SMEAGOL and wrestle him down]

FRODO
Don't hurt him! Sméagol, don't struggle! Sméagol, listen to me!

SMEAGOL
Master! No! No!

SMEAGOL
Master! No! No!

FARAMIR
Where are you leading them? Answer me!

GOLLUM
Sméagol... Why do you cry, Sméagol?

SMEAGOL
Cruel men hurts us. Master tricksed us.

GOLLUM
Of course he did. I told you he was tricksy. I told you he was false.

SMEAGOL
Master is our friend... our friend.

GOLLUM
Master betrayed ussss!

SMEAGOL
No, not it's business. Leave us alone.

GOLLUM
Filthy little hobbitsesss! They stole it from usss!

SMEAGOL
No... no

GOLLUM
Filthy little hobbitsesss! They stole it from usss!

SMEAGOL
No... no

FARAMIR
What did they steal?

GOLLUM
My PRECIOUS!!!!

[SAM and FRODO are huddled in a room]

SAM
We have to get out of here. You go. Go now. You can do it. Use the Ring, Mr. Frodo. Just this once. Put it on. Disappear.

FRODO
I can't. You were right, Sam. You tried to tell me. I'm sorry. The Ring's taking me, Sam. If I put it on, he'll find me. He'll see.

SAM
Mr. Frodo...

[Suddenly FARAMIR enters, drawing his sword]

FARAMIR
So... this is the answer to all the riddles. Here in the wild I have you. Two Halfings and a host of men at my call. And the Ring of Power within my grasp. A chance for Faramir, captain of Gondor, to show his quality.

FRODO
No!

[During the following dialogue, FARAMIR's eyes keep straying to the ring]

FARAMIR
What are you doing here with this, so far east under the shadow of That Land?

FRODO
An errand which was appointed to me by Elrond of Rivendell himself before the whole Council. On that errand I came into this country. It is not mine to reveal to any outside my Company, but those who claim to oppose the Enemy would do well not to hinder it.

FARAMIR
So, you bid me mind my affairs and let you be. Do you know where he [indicating Gollum] is leading you?

FRODO
To a path which goes up into a high pass in the mountains.

FARAMIR
A pass beside Minas Morgul, the Citadel of the Nine Riders. Do you know the name of that pass?

FRODO
No.

FARAMIR
It is called Cirith Ungol.

FRODO
What do you know against this place, that makes its name so dreadful?

FARAMIR
Nothing certain. But when it is named, masters of lore grow pale and fall silent.  Some dark terror dwells there. You must not go with this creature. He is wicked, and has told you less of Cirith Ungol than he knows.

FRODO
He says there is no other way. What would you have me do?

FARAMIR
I would not have you go to death and torment.

FRODO
Over the mountains I am bound, by solemn undertaking to the Council of Rivendell. Where else would you direct me?

FARAMIR
To Minas Tirith.

FRODO
Would you have me come to Gondor with this ring which drives men mad with desire?  Think what spell it would work in Minas Tirith! Shall there be two cities of Minas Morgul grinning at each other across a dead land filled with rottenness?

DAMROD (entering)
Osgiliath is under attack. They call for reinforcements.

SAM (to FARAMIR)
Please. It's such a burden. Will you not help him?

DAMROD
Captain?

FARAMIR
Prepare to leave. The Ring will go to Gondor.

[ARAGORN sees the army of Saruman and quickly rides to Helm's Deep.]

[TREEBEARD approaches the edge of Fangorn Forest]

[FARAMIR and his company reach Osgiliath with FRODO, SAM, and GOLLUM as captives]

DAMROD
Look. Osgiliath burns. Mordor has come.

FRODO
The Ring will not save Gondor. It has only the power to destroy. Please, let me go.

[FARAMIR looks at FRODO, but then gestures to his men to move.]

FARAMIR
Hurry.

FRODO
Faramir, you must let me go!

SAM
You want to know what happened to Boromir?  He tried to take the Ring from Frodo. After swearing an oath to protect him, he tried to kill him! The Ring drove your brother mad!

MADRIL
Faramir, Orcs have taken the eastern shore. Their numbers are too great. By nightfall we'll be overrun.

[FRODO stumbles]

SAM
Mr. Frodo!

FRODO
It's calling to him, Sam. His eye is almost on me.

SAM
Hold on, Mr. Frodo. You'll be alright.

[The RINGWRAITHS approach. FRODO knows.]

SAM
Mr. Frodo?

FRODO
They're here. They've come.

RINGWRAITH
(screeches)

FARAMIR
Nazgûl!

[A RINGWRAITH flies over Osgiliath and FARAMIR leads the hobbits to safety]

FARAMIR
Stay here. Keep out of sight. Take cover!

[FRODO walks out into the open]

SAM
What are you doing? Where are you going?

[The RINGWRAITH riding a Fell Mount approaches]

[FRODO is about to put on the Ring when SAM runs up and tackles him. FARAMIR shoots the Ringwraith's steed with his bow. The hobbits roll down the stairs, Sam landing on FRODO who rolls over and draws his sword preparing to kill SAM.]

SAM
It's me. It's your Sam. Don't you know your Sam?

[FRODO comes to his senses]

FRODO
I cannot do this, Sam.

FARAMIR
What is it you have to do?

FRODO
I have to find a way into Mordor. I must find the Mountain of Fire and throw the ring into the Cracks of Doom. Gandalf said so. I do not think I shall ever get there.

[FRODO collapses forward, and is caught by FARAMIR who picks him up and sets him down with his back to the wall]

FARAMIR: Water!

[SAM gives FARAMIR a fierce 'this is my business' look, and finds his own water bottle to give to FRODO]

SAM
It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered, the ones that stayed in the mind. Full of darkness and danger they were. And not all had a good end, at least not what the folk inside the story might call good.  Folk seemed to have been just landed in them, like us, and they had lots of chances of turning back. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they would have been forgotten. But they didn't. We hear about those who just went on.

[While SAM is speaking, FARAMIR retrieves the sword, and comes to kneel beside FRODO]

FARAMIR
And sometimes, beyond hope, they return to the lands of the living and re-tell the tales, sitting by a wall in the sun and laughing at old grief.

[FRODO stands up. FARAMIR, still kneeling, hands him the sword courteously]

FARAMIR
I think at last we understand one another, Frodo Baggins. I would not now take this ring, even if it lay by the highway. Not even if Minas Tirith fell into ruin and I could save her only by using it. If you took it upon yourself, unwilling, at others' asking, you have pity and honour from me. And I marvel at you, to keep it hid and not to use it. Are all Hobbits like this?  Your land must be a realm of peace and content, and there gardeners must be in high honour.

FRODO
Not all is well there, but certainly gardeners are honoured.

FARAMIR
You shall go now, with my blessing.

FRODO
Thank you. Elrond told me I should find friendship upon the way, secret and unlooked for. To have found friendship as you have shown turns evil to great good.

SAM
You have showed your quality, Sir; the very highest.

FARAMIR
A pert servant, Master Samwise. But the praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

MADRIL
You know the laws of our country. The laws of your father. If you let them go, your life will be forfeit.

FARAMIR
Then it is forfeit. Release them.
