Ages of Characters during "The Great Years"
Compiled by Guthwine for the Mark
Did
a little research and here are the ages of the characters in year 3018
of the Third Age, the year that Frodo leaves Bag-end on the quest with
the ring....
Aragorn...87
Gimli.....139
Gandalf...2018
(an estimate based upon him and the other Istari coming to ME
around year 1000 of the Third Age)
Frodo....50
Sam......35
Merry....36
Pippin...28
Theoden...70
Eowyn.....23
Eomer.....27
Faramir...35
Boromir...40
Bilbo.....128
(Remember Bilbo's Farewell Feast was actually in the year 3001, his 111th (eleventy first) birthday.
So a period of 17 years passes between his feast and Frodo leaving Bag End with the ring)
Legolas.....?????
The big question mark!!! His Father Thranduil was estimated at coming to ME
in year 1000 of the SECOND age....so Legolas had to be at most 5459 years old, but we really don't know when he was born.
An Addendum from Lady Lindiriel:
You might need an age adjustment regarding Hobbits but maybe it can't
be done because of typos... According to appendix B:
- Samwise was born in 2983, but his birth year is also shown as 1380 S.R. (see appendix C)
- Meriadoc was born in 1382 S.R. and Peregrin in 1390.
- Frodo
was born in 1368 S.R.
- The problem is, Frodo is also listed as being
born in 2968 of the Third age. His dates line up (and we are fairly
confident he was 50 when he left on the quest), but Sam's dates do not
line up. So there's a typo somewhere in the text (and I hate to
point out a flaw in Tolkien's masterpiece...), unless you have a
re-edited version that I don't. Since Sam had a sister born in 1383
S.R. I am inclined to believe that appendix B is incorrect since Hobbit
twins do not seem to be very common. Anyway, sorry to be nitpicky. I
just always thought of Sam as older than Merry and Pippin.
