Faramir Has Come Back

Nights without sleep
And food with no savour.
A white castle set
Beyond the grey
Tide of time. Days
Without hope
A father without a son.

Hounds in the Great Hall
Faithful, watchful
Like the sons
I sent to war. Only
Servants now to command.
Like a king I said farewell
And sent them off to death.

What future now,
Even in victory?
A lone twilight
No wife, no child
No pardon from memory.
The hollow moon
Laughs in mockery.

Boromir’s horn
Echoed in the fortress
When he set out. Light
The funeral fire, for
Faramir has come back.
The stars are veiled, the sky
A mantle all of black.
