Afterglow

With evening came sunshine
But we were not fooled.
Darkness lay ahead.
The end of my day.

Always there was darkness
Had I but seen it.
On Weathertop, in Moria,
Following me.

Let me light the lamp!
Sam would say.
Don’t sit here in the dark…
But dark calls to dark.

Soon the others will turn back
Even Sam, my own Sam.
And I will go on alone
Into a new dark

Not for the world,
Wide and foreign
But just for the Shire,
Home, warm and bright.

But in my hands
I held the crown
And raised it high, for all to see
For all the world to see.

And in my heart
Afterglow scented the night
Darkness sweet not bitter
Starlight after rain.
