Ode to a Pony

Gandalf’s Fireworks

“The finest rockets ever seen
They burst in stars of Blue and Green!
Or after thunder, Silver showers
Came falling like a rain of flowers.”

Fireworks, Gandalf! Fireworks, please!
Ooo, don’t disappoint – set our hearts at ease!

With twinkle in eye and a puff on the pipe,
A touch with his staff – the first firework he lights.

Sudden burst of smoke, then squirly-gig stars
Spin and fan out – may we have more?

Bright sparks delight the old and wee
Who jump to catch them in their glee.

Another rocket streams way up high,
We watch it fade in the drab night sky.

Staring intently into the dark,
Suddenly – wait! – Is that a spark?

Yes! A spark! And now a burst
Of colored fire-falls quenches our thirst!

Explosions so loud to wake the dead,
Delighted laughter is heard instead.

Now a bud of brilliant white
Blossoms in the pitch-black night.

Then comes a ring of widening spears
Racing close to the ground 'til they disappear.

Butterflies and dragons bold,
Sparkle hot! And glitter cold.

Get the Big One! It’s Dragon Red!
Will it awe or scare instead?

Paperwrapped with a great long wick,
Light it! Aim it! Jump away quick!

Swiftly it streaks away highest of all,
Small burst, then, it becomes a ball.

Faster the orb soars shimmering Orange and Red
Changing from flame into sinister head.

A wide mouth forms with great sharp teeth
To balance glowing wings of volcanic heat.

Closer it draws to us plunging down low,
Onto our bellies we must go.

Terrified and scared we hide our eyes
‘Til the dragon fizzles and fades in the sky.

Stunned by this perilous narrow escape
We peek out cautiously, our mouths agape.

Quickly fright turns into astonshing delight
As we witness the most radiant dazzle of this splendid night.

Shaped like mushrooms, dragons, and spears,
Gandalf’s fireworks dispel all fears.

Happiness! Thrill! Such pleasured enchantment
Is ours from our wizard’s candle enhancement!

“The finest rockets ever seen
They burst in stars of Blue and Green!
Or after thunder, Silver showers
Came falling like a rain of flowers.”
