An Ode to Sam

- Rosie Cotton
No Sam, please don’t cry
My love for you will never die.
When you were a boy and came to play with my brothers, I loved your jokes that were never mean.
When you took over the charges of the Old Gaffer to tend Mr. Frodo’s garden,
I often passed it and wished to be a Rose in more than just the name.
When I danced at Mr. Bilbo’s birthday party, I danced - but when you danced with me, I had wings.
And then you were gone and folks told me not to wait, to move on.
But I stayed – and you came back. Altered but yet the same.
I was blessed the day when you asked me to marry you.
Now that I am old I see all our beautiful children and I know, my life has been good.
No Sam, please don’t cry
My love for you will never die.
