Fair Shield-maiden

Fair shield-maiden of the horse-lords,
Spirit unmatched by warriors
You steeled your heart against your will,
To fight Rohan’s enemies instilled

Deep within yourself to hide,
The pain from your king at your side.
How harrowing it must have felt,
To be considered less than yourself

To have and lose so much in life
You wished to yell the battle cry,
That came about in times of strife
Of Rohirrim in days gone by.

You found a way, your wish not stayed,
Though those around would otherwise
Keep you from harm until that day
When all alone none heard your cries.

Yet this day never came to you
On grassy lands of horses bold,
You fought the Witch-King, lord of Carn Dum,
To nether regions, his death is told.
