Time is a White Tree

- Lothithil

Brought from the treeless Sea
Seeded in darkness and
Rooted to the earth
Stretching with splayed fingers to the light
And never reaching
Bite of weather and wind thicken the skin
Bark on bole bleeding sap from bent branches
Leaves are years
Each unfolds and falls
A new millenia each autumn
Replaced, renewed, re-lived
Unil no more come
Sap dried and seed spent
Rind cold and hollow
Arms heavy hang down to the earth
Skyroots gnarled with age
Blackened by lightning
Stretching toward darkness
But never reaching
