Playing the Game

Playing the Game
no apologies for double entendre

Walking soft on nimble feet
Try to calm the deafening beat
Of my racing heart; pulse excited
Soon, the hunter and the hunted united

A magic moment for me here
Prey in sight, as yet unaware
Believing stealth has won them ground
When truth is, I have run them down

Bemused I watch the trap they prepare
All unconscious of my stare
In arrogance they do not suspect
That soon their bounty I’ll collect!

Amusing as it is to wait
It would be foolish to hesitate
Too long, lest I run afoul of my own vanity
And lose my life to this living profanity

But look! My luck has not yet left me…
They’re taking cover beneath my tree!
