Bitter Heart
A villanelle

Can he with his innocence survive this trial alone
Though his efforts are assisted by Man and Elf and Ent?
The Valar watching distantly have hearts made out of stone

Not a creature forged of metal, he is only flesh and bone
Yet into the very Fires of Doom he is to be sent
Can he with his innocence survive this trial alone?

If it were somehow possible my strength I would him loan
To watch him slowly lose himself has my spirit deeply rent
The Valar watching distantly have hearts made out of stone

Less fruitlessly would I have lived, if I had but known
For listless lingering in fields of clover is this hobbit meant
Can he with his innocence survive this trial alone?

He goes to reap the bitter harvest our indifference has sown
With only one companion and what hope he has not spent
The Valar watching distantly have hearts made out of stone

Mighty Ones beyond the Sea his sufferings condone
And though welcomed he to Elvenhome across the oceans bent
Can he with his innocence survive this trial alone?
The Valar watching distantly have hearts made out of stone
