The Ballad of Bill's Quest

- LilyWillow

There are strange tales told of a pony bold
Who went on the quest of the ring
It was stranger still to this pony, Bill
To be on this sort of...thing!

He was rescued from a life, by Sam, of strife
With that cruel fellow, Ferny
And an apple Sam throws hit him on the nose
To celebrate the coming journey!

The troop led Bill down dale and up hill
To try to stay alive,
So to Weathertop where they needs must stop
And face the Nazgul five.

Then the pony Bill of flight had his fill
As he carried Frodo to the place
Where the five were met by an elf in a fret
On the way to the ford in a race.

While in Rivendell Bill could eat his fill
And recover his vigour and his youth
He was rested there in the pure elven air
And was keen to go on, in truth.

The fellowship nine set off in winter time
With Bill carrying a heavy load
They skirted west of the mountains best
To avoid the dangerous road

But it soon became clear that their way was near
To the watchful eyes of Orthanc
He sent crebain to spy as the group climbed high
And on their sharp reports he could bank.

The wizard he said, "Take Caradhras instead,"
Of the dangerous road, we contrive-
When Redhorn made it clear it did not want them there
Our Bill kept the hobbits alive.

They struggled with Bill going right down that hill
As he held cold Gimli on his back
The men pushed through the snow as the way they must go
And dear Bill helped to keep them on track.

And so came at last to the Mines dark and vast
Where our Bill was not able to go
'I fear we must say farewell, Bill, on this day'
Said Gandalf, as Bill hung his head low.

Poor Sam felt so bad and the parting was sad
For these friends who had been through so much
But the water near roiled and their passage was spoiled
As Sam gave Bill one last parting touch.

Bill galloped away as the Watcher held sway
And grabbed Frodo to swing in the air
They ran quickly inside of the Mines for to hide -
But Bill was no longer out there.

There are strange tales told of a pony bold
Who went on the quest of the ring
It was stranger still to this pony, Bill
To be on this sort of...thing!
