Setting Out on the Quest (Sam Remembers)

- jan-u-wine

Go back

in your mind

to that long-ago day

when we set out:

it shimmers

there

like a dream

you cannot touch.

See the tender green

of the fern

beside

the sweet dust of the Road.

Remember?

You said it was

cool

against your feet

and you

laughed

at the corn

in the field

that whispered

as if it held

a secret

in its close-fisted stalk.

Remember?

Knobbed tree-roots

encompassed a

sleepless night,

(you STILL laughed!),

rich earth-smell

flowing

from their gnarled forms.

Remember?

And.....

the

Elves!

Do you remember

the Fair Folk

and the

stars

that shone

that night?

Only they

have passed away,

singing,

into the West.

We remain.

We

shall walk those

paths

again

and remember them

and sing softly

with joy

beneath kindly

stars.

You and I

will

walk there

and

remember.
