Grey Shadows

- Firiel
Grey shadows in the windswept trees,
Cold stars within the winter skies,
The glade beneath the stars is haunted
With echoes of unsaid good-byes.

A maiden pale stands there within it,
Standing straight with face of stone,
Her eyes with hurt, yet disbelieving
Filled - she stands there all alone.

“He loved me once, and here together
Many times we two have stood.
And yet, here now he long has left me -
Without farewell, though oft he could

"Have said good-bye to me forever.
He told me he would stay, and yet,
For so long now I've waited for him,
But nevermore we two have met.

"He left without a word," she whispered,
Then shivered at the pain she felt.
Her tear-streaked face she lifted upward,
Sore anguished at the blow he dealt.

"And yet," she murmured after a moment,
"I cannot find a charge of blame
Within my heart, for still I love him -
If I might but see him once again!"

Grey shadows in the windswept trees,
Cold stars within the winter skies,
The glade beneath the stars is haunted
With echoes of unsaid good-byes.

A maiden pale stands still within it,
Waiting there with face of stone,
Her eyes with hurt, yet disbelieving
Filled - she stands still all alone.
