Alone

I slip on the ring,
Heavy, cold to the touch
Surrounded am I by brilliant sheen,
Sparkling, glossy, blinding me to you

What do you see as I wander your halls?
You elven fair with your heads in the clouds
Held high, first born, children of light,
Concerned with affairs lofty and sublime.

What do you see as I roam in your dales?
You of mankind strength ingrained in your bearing,
Second born, yet granted a place,
Striving for glory through power and might.

If I wander your caves you dwarven delvers
Created with pride, though lower in stature
Your work is a wonder - Creating and making
In beauty much pleasure in craft and sight

Three races are you all greater than mine.
The strata of the heaven bound, the earth bound
And the caves internal.
I mingle among you seeking a place.
Do you know me at all – my name, just a face?
In the throng passing by
Your heads far above me
Never seeing me below
Do you see that I live?
Do you know that I am?

My people - my friends with the every day smiles
Small like me – fun loving, peaceful, encouraging, strong
Can you understand what has happened?
Do you know me no more?

I slip on the ring,
Heavy, cold to the touch
Surrounded am I by brilliant sheen,
Sparkling, glossy, blinding me to you

I ask again
What will you see if I move among your throngs?
Naught will you see
I’m not there at all.
