I Fear a Cage

- Daughter of Kings

I fear a cage:
Bars of everyday life
Slender as thread, strong as steel;
Gilded with the needs of others,
Not my own.

I fear a cage:
Dreams delayed, glory deferred
As each day passes into a lifetime;
Desires fluttering
Ever just out of reach.

I fear a cage:
No ball and chain
But those of heavy limbs
That can no longer recall
The vigor of youth.

I fear a cage:
A life lived in vain
For a tomorrow not reached
Until all its hopes and possibilities
Are lost in yesterday.
