Leaving a Piece of Me Behind

- Dandy
Bilbo left, then Gandalf too
Leaving the Ring that quietly grew
My childhood was gone before I knew
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Wrapping my hand round the simple Ring
Who would have thought it a terrible thing?
My dreams are troubled; my fears take wing
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Why does it tell me Gandalf’s wish to ignore?
The Ring is in the Shire; Bilbo used it before
When did this debate inside become a chore?
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Goldberry and Tom we dance in the house
I try on the Ring as quiet as a mouse
Who would have thought it would cause a rouse
Leaving a piece of me behind.

I silently vow to fulfill the quest
Running and hiding, seeking a place to rest
A Black horse and Rider causing distress
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Arrive at the Pony, can’t stay in our room
I thought it just a small simple tune
An external command, our plan is in ruin
Leaving a piece of me behind.

A company of five, alone on the Top
A cry that will cause my heart to stop
I did not expect the sword to drop
Leaving a piece of me behind.

No! I pull back a moment to late
A thrust in my shoulder, I lost to fate
Now a race against time not a moment to wait
Leaving a piece of me behind.

A moment in paradise we cannot tarry
Foes on our track, silently harry
Over mountain and under, a burden to carry
Leaving a piece of me behind.

A peep in the mirror, a choice to be made
I could give her the Ring and end this charade
But I go on again; I can no longer trade
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Alone on the hillside my soul I had to search
Do I dare go alone; leave my friend’s hearts in a lurch?
How do I descend from this awful perch?
Leaving a piece of me behind.

Traveling onward over marsh and ashen heaps
Once a gardener’s refuge, now loss inside me weeps
While overhead a demon performs searching sweeps
Leaving a piece of me behind.

The fire before me, I take one last look
I can no longer fight it, my will is forsook
I choose not to do this, my voice barely shook
Leaving a piece of me behind.

A fight for controlling, a last gasp to defend
To all things must come that final end
Did I win, because I saved him time and again?
I’ll never know now whether he could be my friend

Leaving the last peace in me behind.
